Accessible lifts must comply with UK Building Regulations to be fit for public or commercial use. According to the most recent government guidance on access to and use of buildings, the minimum access width should be at least 900mm.

However, these guidelines can vary slightly depending on whether your access lift is designed solely for wheelchair users or for both wheelchair and standing passengers. For this reason, it’s always best to consult with a lift installation expert to ensure you have enough space for the lift you want.

Note that these regulations only apply to buildings that will be used by members of the public – they do not apply to home lifts that are installed for personal use.

Access lifts are sometimes referred to as DDA lifts. This means that the lift meets the requirements set out in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of 1995. The DDA was actually replaced by the Equality Act 2010, but many people still refer to these lifts as DDA lifts.

A DDA access lift complies with the Equality Act and ensures people with restricted mobility can access public buildings without difficulty.
